Часть этих функций осуществляется группой белков ? ионных транспортеров. И хотя аминокислотная последовательность большинства из них уже изучена, структурные аспекты, определяющие их ионную специфичность, функцию и регуляцию, предстоит еще уточнить. Необходимо понять, как простые полипептидные цепи осуществляют транспортную функцию. Так как большинство этих транспортеров участвует в осуществлении жизненно важных биологических процессов, данные исследования прольют свет на суть патологических изменений, лежащих в основе многих заболеваний.
