Проводимое традиционное лечение (компенсация углеводного обмена и лазерная коагуляция сетчатки) не всегда предотвращает прогрессирующее снижение зрительных функций. С момента выявления участия ростовых факторов в патогенезе ретинопатии начато клиническое применение лекарственных препаратов, блокирующих сосудистый эндотелиальный фактор роста. Комбинированное лечение с применением средств, направленных на блокирование различных звеньев патогенеза, является более эффективным и имеет лучший отдаленный прогноз.
