Впервые о нефро-ретинальном синдроме как взаимосвязанном микрососудистом осложнении сахарного диабета (СД) указали Эли Фридман и Францис Эсперанс в 1979 г. В свои исследования по изучению диабетической ретинопатии и диабетической нефропатии они включили специалистов ? эпидемиологов, патологоанатомов, патофизиологов и офтальмологов. В результате совместных исследований и наблюдений нефро-ретинальный синдром был определен как сочетанное заболевание почек и глаз, раз- вивающееся вследствие микрососудистых изменений в артериолах и капиллярах сетчатки и клубочках почки. Данные 25-летних наблюдений показали эффективность панретинальной и фокальной лазеркоагуляции в предотвращении потери зрения при развитии пролиферативной диабетической ретинопатии и макулярного отека, а также эффективность тщательного контроля уровня гликемии и артериального давления в уменьшении прогрессирования диабетической ретинопатии, диабетической нефропатии и других сосудистых осложнений, связанных с СД.
